PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Old Dominion senior midfielder senior Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) tied her season-high with seven goals, including the game-winner with 1:19 remaining, to lift the Lady Monarchs to a 9-8 victory over Rutgers University at Yurcak Field in both team's season finales.
The Lady Monarchs close out the 2004 season on a two-game win streak with a 5-11 overall record. The Scarlet Knights, who were fresh off an upset victory over No. 6 Notre Dame, fell to 7-8 on the year.
The Lady Monarchs outscored the Scarlet Knights 4-1 in the second half after trailing 5-7 at the intermission. In the first half, Old Dominion held a 4-2 advantage with 14:21 on the clock before the Scarlet Knights netted five unanswered goals to take over the lead. Wosczyna, with seven seconds left before halftime, scored her fourth tally of the game as Old Dominion trailed by two going into the second half.
The Scarlet Knights reached the back of the net first less than three minutes into half number two, but from there the Lady Monarchs dominated the game not allowing Rutgers to score again the entire game. With the Scarlet Knights leading 8-5, Old Dominion scored the game's final three goals. Freshman midfielder Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, MD) tied the game up at 8-8 with 4:12 remaining and Wosczyna fired off the game-winner with 1:19 to give Old Dominion the victory.
In net, senior goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made four saves in net for the Lady Monarchs and also collected a game-high seven groundballs. Freshman midfielder Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, PA) scooped up three groundballs to go along with three draw controls and junior Cassandra Conner (Crozet, VA) caused two turnovers.
