NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team will close out the 2004 season when they travel to Piscataway, NJ to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lady Monarchs have won five of the nine meetings with the Scarlet Knights and will mark the first meetings since the 2000 season.
Rutgers is coming off a 7-6 upset of No. 6 Notre Dame and holds a 7-7 overall mark and 3-3 record in BIG EAST competition. Earlier this season the Scarlet Knights faced CAA members Hofstra and Delaware with the Scarlet Knights emerging victorious in both outings, defeating the Pride, 12-7, and the Fightin' Blue Hens, 12-8.
The Scarlet Knights are led by rookie midfielder Katie Batiuk with 43 points and 29 goals and 14 assists. Second leading scorer, senior midfielder Maggie Bopp, enters the game with 26 goals and 27 points. Bopp was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after helping Rutgers to the uspet of the Irish by scoring a pair of goals in the game's final 69 seconds to lead the Scarlet Knights to victory.
The Lady Monarchs enter their final game of the 2004 season with a 4-11 overall mark having played eight nationally ranked opponents this season. Last Wednesday night, Old Dominion closed out its CAA slate with a 13-12 upset win over #17 William and Mary to finish 1-6 in the league. Senior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) netted the game-winner with 11 second remaining in the contest and totaled season-high nine points on four goals and five assists. The senior midfielder scored the game's final three goals within a three minute span. The victory over the Tribe gave Old Dominion's its first win since a 17-4 win over Lafayette back on March 28th.
Wosczyna, ODU's all-time leader in points, goals, and assists, continues to lead the squad with 50 goals, 28 assists, and 78 points ranking sixth among NCAA Division I student-athletes in scoring. Senior attacker Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD), who netted a hat trick in the Lady Monarchs' upset victory last week, checks in as the squad's second leading active scorer with 24 goals, 13 points, and 37 points.
