FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior midfielder Lisa Hagan(Collingswood, NJ) recorded four goals, including three in the secondperiod, and added two assists for George Mason as the 20th-rankedPatriots downed visiting Old Dominion 13-9 Friday evening in a ColonialAthletic Association women's lacrosse contest at GMU Stadium. It was theleague opener for both teams as Mason improves to 3-3 overall on theyear (1-0 CAA) and the Lady Monarchs drop to 3-4 on the season (0-1CAA). With the victory, Patriot head coach Amy Umbach earns her 50th winin seven seasons as the Mason mentor, and the Patriots snap a four-gamelosing skid to ODU.

"We started out with a great and determined effort to begin the game,"said Umbach. "We had very balanced scoring and played solid defensivelythroughout the contest. ODU has been a tough team for us to play overthe years and this win gives us a lot of confidence entering the CAAportion of our schedule."

Junior attacker Tracy Waterson (Niskayuna, NY) opened the scoring withtwo salvos to stake 2-0 Mason lead in the first five minutes. The LadyMonarchs Caroline Jacobs got a feed from Suzanne Wosczyna to cut thedeficit to 2-1 at 24:45. The two teams exchanged the next three goals asMason held a 3-2 advantage. Back-to-back markers from freshman MelissaVenturi (Sewell, NJ) and senior defender Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD)lifted the Patriots to a 5-2 margin. Junior attacker Kristy Manas(Harwood, MD) sandwiched in another goal between scores from ODU's MollyCoane and Wosczyna, keeping Mason ahead 6-4 with 9:59 left in the half.The Patriots netted the final markers of the stanza as sophomoreattacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA), Hagan and Manas each scoredone to lift George Mason to a 9-4 margin at intermission.

The Lady Monarchs' Melody Shotwell began the second period withconsecutive goals to trim the Patriot advantage to 9-6 with 23:23remaining. The Patriots responded with four unanswered goals, includingthree straight from Hagan, to push the lead to 13-6 at the 13:00 mark.ODU tallied the final three scores resulting in the 13-9 final.

George Mason junior goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD) stopped sixshots to become the Patriots' all-time career saves leader with 521,moving ahead of Jolette Solanga (1994-98) who previously held the markof 518. ODU goalkeeper Michelle Gannon finished with nine saves. ThePatriot defensive unit of junior Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD),freshmen Melissa Curry (Edgewater, MD) and Deona Donahue (Shamong, NJ)and sophomore Michele Brady (Fairfax, VA) forced 20 turnovers and helpedcollect 15 draw controls.

George Mason visits 16th ranked William & Mary Sunday at 12 noon. ODUhosts No. 7 James Madison at 1 p.m.
