NEWARKE, DE-- Junior righthander Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) pitched a completegame three-hitter and fanned a career high 12 batters to lead Old Dominion to a 14-2CAA victory over Delaware Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs pounded out a season high 19 hits and 14 runs. Senior Allen Strickhad three hits, including a grand slam home run in the ninth. He knocked in five runson the day. Freshman Bryan Cipolla had four hits and two runs batted in, while BrandonCarter, and Derek James each knocked in two runs.
Delaware took a 2-0 lead in the second when catcher Brian Valichka slammed a two-runhomer. The Monarchs came back in the fourth when Derek James slammed a two-runshot with Steven Harris aboard. ODU took the lead in the fifth as Carter's groundoutplated Keith Hahn.
Donnie Smith currently ranks third in the CAA in strikeouts behind Verlander andVCU's Orenduff. He now has 72 strikeouts in 58 innings and a 2.48 earned run average.After giving up the homer, Smith allowed only two more hits and a walk the rest ofthe game. It was his first complete game of the season.
The same two teams play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1:00 atthe Bob Hannah Stadium.
