NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion baseball team fell to the Princeton Tigers, 9-5, Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Monarchs drop to 6-9 for the season, while Princeton remains perfect, improving to 3-0. The Tigers swept the three-game series.

Third baseman Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD) went 2-for-4 for the game and batted in two runs to lead the Monarch effort. Pinch-hitter Joe Moore (Woodbridge, VA) and first baseman Bryan Cippola (Plainview, NY) both also batted in runs for ODU. Justin Gregula (Washington, PA), who pinch-hit for the game, scored the other Monarch run after a balk was called on the Princeton pitcher.

ODU held a 2-1 lead going into the top of the eighth, before the Tigers belted out three runs to grab a 4-2 lead. Going into the top of the ninth, Princeton still held onto a 4-2 lead before scoring five more to increase their lead to 9-2. In the bottom of the ninth, the Monarchs attempted a rally, scoring three runs, but it would not be enough as Princeton took the 9-5 victory. Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA) took the loss for the Monarchs, pitching seven innings, while allowing six hits, one earned run and striking out four Tigers. Princeton's Gavin Fabian was the winning pitcher.

The Monarchs are back in action at home on Wednesday, March 10, when they take on the VMI Keydets.
