ODU Defeats VMI Behind Verlander, Burok & Smith, 4-2

NORFOLK, VA-Old Dominion (10-10) defeated Virginia Military Institute,4-2 Tuesday night behind the combined pitching of Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.), James Burok (Archbald, PA.) and Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.).

Junior shortstop Brandon Carter (Sacramento, CA.) knocked in two runs for ODU. He singled home Kenny Gram (Tempe, AZ.) in the second to give ODU a 2-1 lead, and tripled home Eric Mesa (Miami, Fl.) in the fourth. In the first inning Carterscored on freshman firstbaseman Bryan Cipolla's sacrifice fly. The fourth ODU runcame in the seventh as Derek James' (Terre Haute, IN.) groundout plated Keith Hahn(Valley Stream, NY.).

B.T. Good led VMI with three hits on the evening. Kelly Sweppenhiser scoredon Sean Seawell's groundout in the second inning. Elliott Erbe's (Portsmouth, VA.)groundout in the fifth plated Brandon Massenburg.

James Burok picked up his first win of the season and Donnie Smith fannedeight in four innings of relief to pick up his second save of the season. ODU returnsto action on Wednesday when they host Liberty at 7 p.m.
