NORFOLK, VA-Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md.) knocked in three runs and reliever Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) came on in the eighth and picked up the save as Old Dominion (8-10) defeated Kent State (5-9), 9-7 Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball complex.
The Monarchs led, 7-0 going into the seventh inning. Senior third basemanAllen Strick doubled home Dana Arrowood and Steven Harris (Va.Beach, Va.-Kellam HS) in the second, then doubled home Harris in the sixth. Harris also doubled in Derek James (Terre Haute, IN.) and Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) in the seventh inning to give ODU a 9-2 lead.
Junior righthander Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.-Norcom HS) picked up his second win of the season. He fanned a career high ten batters in just seven innings of work. He held Kent State scoreless until Chad Kinyon belted a two-run shot over the centerfield fence with Emmannuel Burriss aboard with two outs in the seventh.
KSU then scored five runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, EricHolik doubled home Ben Whitney, Matt Sega, and Marshall Woods. Holikscored on Andrew Davis' double and Davis scored on a wild pitch by RickyShefka.
Dana Arrowood came on in the eighth to get the final out and then satKSU down in order in the top of the ninth. Arrowood also beat Kent StateFriday night with five innings of relief. The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday when they host Duke at 3 p.m.
