NORFOLK, VA -- The brackets revealed that the Old Dominion women's basketball team will be traveling to Durham, North Carolina to Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University to open up play at the 2004 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The Lady Monarchs, seeded eighth in the Mideast, take on ninth seeded Marquette on March 21st.
The Lady Monarchs are making their 13th straight and 20th overall appearance in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Old Dominion is 32-18 overall at the dance having won the national title in 1985 and advancing to the national final in 1997. The Lady Monarchs are a seventh seed for the second time in school history.
Old Dominion, who advances to the NCAA Tournament after capturing its 13th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title, has never faced Marquette on the hardwood. The Golden Eagles received an at-large bid to the tournament with a 21-9 overall mark and a 9-5 record in Conference USA. Marquette advanced to the C-USA semifinals falling to eventual champion Houston, a three seed in the East bracket.
The winner of the Old Dominion/Marquette match-up will advance to a second round match-up with the victor of the top seed Duke/sixteen seed Northwestern State contest on March 23rd. The Lady Monarchs have never faced Northwestern State, while holding a 4-5 mark against the Blue Devils. Most recently, the Lady Monarchs and Blue Devils squared off at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas over the 2002 Thanksgiving Holiday, with the Blue Devils emerging with a 65-52 win.
The Lady Monarchs are 2-4 against the tournament field, having captured victories over Penn State (75-68) and North Carolina (73-68). The Lady Lions are the top seed in the East, while the Tar Heels are in the East as well as a four seed.
