CHARLESTON, SC-Curtis Clinton and Lee Fritz each knocked in two runs tohelp West Virginia defeat ODU, 7-4 in the first game of the Citadel/Homewood Shootout at Riley Park. ODU (2-2) was led by Derek James (Terre Haute, IN) with three hits.Both teams pounded out 12 hits.

Kenneth Gram (Tempe, AZ) scored ODU's first run in the third inning on an infield error. ODU cut WVU's lead to 3-2 in the fourth as James tripled and scored on Gram's single.

In the seventh inning, ODU scored two more runs as Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) singled home Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.), then Steven Harris (Va. Beach, Va.) scored on a C.J. Lee (Bristol, VA.) groundout. Harris, Gram and Brandon Carter (Sacramento, CA) each had two hits on the day.

The Monarchs will play Richmond Saturday morning at 11 am in game two ofthe tournament, then play host Citadel on Sunday at 3 p.m.
