NORFOLK, VA -- Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) scored 38 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated WBC Ilirija, 107-44, in exhibition action at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Tuesday night.
WBC Ilirija, who has five of its members belong to the Slovenian National Team, led early in the first half, 7-2, before the Lady Monarchs got hot and put the game away early. Old Dominion proceeded to go on a 29-6 run capped off by a Coker three point shot that gave her team a 31-13 advantage by the 8:38 mark of the opening half. Old Dominion took a 48-23 half time lead behind Coker's 21 first half points.
The Lady Monarchs offense continued to dominate in the second half outscoring their exhibition opponent, 59-21. WBC Ilirija got as close as 31 points with 14:17 remaining with Old Dominion leading, 65-34, however following the timeout, the Lady Monarch defense held its opponent to just two points over the next seven minutes.
In all, Old Dominion shot 53 percent from the floor while the Lady Monarch defense held WBC Ilirija to 33.3 percent from the field. Coker nearly 80 percent from the field going 15-of-19 including 3-of-4 from downtown.
In all three Lady Monarchs were in double figures, including senior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) pouring in 19 points, while sophomore Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, FL) added in 15 to along with Coker's 38.
Redshirt freshman Shantel Wilson (Washington, D.C.) dished out 12 assists as ODU's starting point guard.
WBC Ilirija had one player in double figures. Ajda Gabrovsek netted 17 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Monarchs will close out the exhibition season next Tuesday, November 11 when they host Basketball Travelers. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
LADY MONARCH NOTES:
Old Dominion sophomore center Corrina Turner (Miami, FL) will miss the2003-04 season after MRI results revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. The 6-6 center suffered the injury in practice at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on October 27th, one day prior to the Lady Monarchs' annual Blue-White scrimmage.
Lady Monarch newcomer Letitia Lyons (Newport News, VA) did not dress for the exhibition game tonight against WBC Ilirija due to a fracture to the proximal phalanx of the fifth finger on her left hand. Lyons is listed as day-to-day pending further evaluation.
