NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team will take to the court against WBC Ilirija from Slovenia in exhibition action tomorrow night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The Lady Monarchs will tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
WBC Ilirija is one of the oldest women's basketball clubs in Slovenia, founded in 1962. In the last 12 years of their independence, Ilirija has been one of the top four teams at the national level. Ilirija is beginning its fifth tour of the U.S. on Tuesday night against the Lady Monarchs and will also face Virginia Tech, UNC-Greensboro, and Penn State in the coming weeks. Four of the club's team members participated with the national team in South Korea this past summer and five members are current national team members.
Old Dominion is coming off their annual Blue-White exhibition which saw five Lady Monarchs in double figures. Senior forward Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) led all Lady Monarchs with 29 points, while fellow senior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) netted 23 points. Guard/forward Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, FL) had an impressive second year debut with a double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds), while senior guard Myriah Spence (Espanola, NM) poured in 12 points and newcomer Sherida Triggs (Norcross, GA) added in 10 points.
The Lady Monarchs will have one more exhibition following Tuesday's game with Ilirija before opening up the 2003-04 season. Old Dominion hosts team concept on Tuesday, November 11th before traveling to the University of Colorado in Boulder to participate in the WBCA Preseason Classic. The Lady Monarchs, who take on the second toughest non-conference schedule in the country, will face Colorado in the opening round followed by either Notre Dame or Auburn in the following bracket. Both Colorado and Notre Dame reached the Sweet 16 of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, while Auburn captured the 2003 WNIT Title.
