NORFOLK, VA.-Old Dominion University head men's basketball coachBlaine Taylor announced the signing of 6-5, 195-pound forward Jason Thompsonfrom Chatham Central High School in Bear Creek, NC.

"Jason was the prototype for what we were looking for," said ODU head coachBlaine Taylor. "We identified him quite early and were just delighted when everythingcame together. Jason was our number one need in the fall with John Waller beinga graduating senior. He is quite an athlete, plays above the rim and is a strongdefender. As he gains experience, develops his skills, we believe Jason is going tobe a real fine contributor in our program."

Thompson was runner-up for the Yadkin Valley Conference Player of the Yearaward in 2003 and was the Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore. Thompsonaveraged 21.3 points per game, and 9.7 rebounds per game for Bill Slaughter, headcoach at Chatham Central. A two-time Herald All-Area team selection, Thompsonled Chatham to a 22-5 record, and the round of 16 in the state playoffs.

"I was really impressed with the coaching staff at Old Dominion, and I fit inwith the team," said Thompson. "I am looking forward to playing in the ConstantCenter."

Thompson thus far has 1,401 career points and 693 career rebounds. Last year,he scored 33 points in a game against West Davidson and as a sophomore he scored37 points in a state play-off game against Hendersonville.

"This brings to ten the total of new players we have brought in over thelast two years," said Taylor. " Now it's time to develop this crew, let them goand watch them grow."
