RICHMOND, Va.-Matt Mendy's goal early in the first half lifted the Patriots ofGeorge Mason to a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association semi-finals Friday night at the Sports Backers Stadium. The GMU victory (11-5-5) putsthem into Sunday's finals against VCU, who defeated JMU in the other semi-final, 3-0. ODU, ranked seventh by SOCCER AMERICA, eighth by SOCCER TIMES,13th by the NSCAA and 14th by COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS is now 14-3-1.
In what was a defensive struggle, the Monarchs outshot George Mason, 7-2.First team All-CAA goalkeeper John O'Hara came up with three saves and his tenth shutout of the season. Second team All-CAA goalkeeper Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC.) had one save on the night. GMU did not get a shot off in the entire second half.
All-CAA selections Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia), Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) and Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO.) each hadone shot on goal.
The Patriot goal came as Jacob Weitz passed to Mendy who pushed it in theright corner of the net. The NCAA pairings will be announced Monday at 3:30 p.m.on ESPN News channel.
