ANNAPOLIS, MD-- Former ODU three-time sailing All-American Sally Barkow(Nashotah,WIS.ODU'02) and her crew of Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, NY-'03), Carrie Howe andAnnie Lush won the US Sailing's 2003 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship,the most prestigious women's sailing regatta.
Barkow and Capozzi, who are both on the US Sailing squad are olympic hopefuls inthe Yngling Class at the 2004 games in Athens.
"It feels awesome to have won," said the 23-year old Barkow, who only started sailingkeelboats one and a half years ago. "We approached the last day with confidence justlike we did every other day. We learned a ton here, from communications, to boathandling to mentally focusing. It was a big step for our campaign."
Coming into the final day of racing, Barkow's team held a 20-point lead over the66 teams in light 8-10 knot breezes, the foursome once again showed command of theirboathand and the scoreboard, with finishes of 3 and eight.
