NORFOLK, VA -- Nine different Lady Monarchs scored as the seventh ranked Old Dominion field hockey team captured its fourth CAA shutout of the season and won its 57th straight CAA contest downing the Towson Tigers, 11-0, on Foreman Field this evening.
The Lady Monarchs, winners of their last five contests, improve to 9-4 overall and 5-0 in the CAA. Old Dominion has blanked all but one conference opponent to date. The Tigers were shutout for the third straight game and fall to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The victory was Old Dominion's largest since a 14-1 victory over then 10th ranked James Madison on November 9th in the CAA semifinals last season. Last season, the Lady Monarchs also shutout Towson, defeating the Tigers 13-0
Among the nine different goal scorers on the night, four Lady Monarchs tallied their first goals of the season. Junior Elizabeth Sharpe (Durham, NC) and freshmen Rachel Daubert (Harrisburg, PA) and Leslie Desimone (Flanders, NJ) each reached the back of the opponent net for the first time in their careers. Multiple goal scorers included Daubert and rookie Darcy Pinchbeck (Suffolk, VA).
Old Dominion dominated the offense outshooting the Tigers 35-2. Towson's junior forward Julie Lambi and junior midfielder Brandi Franks each managed shots on the Lady Monarch net, but both Tiger shots were halted by ODU netminder Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA). Old Dominion also outcornered Towson, 11-3.
The Tigers' Loren Wolf stopped 13 Lady Monarch shots on net, while Christina Armer thwarted four. For Old Dominion, Walker and freshman Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, PA), making her 2003 season debut, combined for the shutout.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they host #11 Delaware. The Lady Monarchs and Fightin' Blue Hens square off at 1:00 p.m. on Foreman Field. Admission to the game is free.
