NORFOLK, VA. -- Three-time Cy Young Award winner and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer (Baltimore Orioles will be the keynote speaker and clinician for the 27th annual Greenwich Kitchens Old Dominion University Baseball Scholarship Clinic and ACS Systems Banquet, Jan. 23rd and 24th 2003.
Tickets for the clinic which will be held in the Old Dominion University fieldhouseon Jan. 24 are $5 for one session, beginning at 9 a.m.
The weekend begins on Friday, Jan. 23 with the ACS Systems "Meet the Stars"Banquet at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m., and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, and will go on sale at the Old Dominion AthleticTicket Office on Oct. 13. Proceeds from the dinner and clinic support baseball scholarshipsat Old Dominion.
Palmer is the only pitcher to win World Series games in three decades, as he earnedvictories for the Orioles in 1966, 1970, 1971 and 1983 Fall Classics. Palmer was a six-timeAll-Star and four-time gold glove award winner. His career ERA was 2.86 over 19 seasons,and never allowed a grand slam. He helped lead the Orioles to six championships in 1960's, 1970's, and the 1980's.
From 1970-1978, Palmer won 20 or more games in all but one season. In 1972 hewas 21-10 with a 2.07 ERA, 22-9 in 1973, and 23-11 with a 2.09 ERA in 1975. Healso won 22 games in 1976. Palmer completed his career with a 268-152 career record for awinning percentage of .638 and eight-20 win seasons. He won the three Cy Young awards in 1973, 1975 and 1976.
Born in New York City, Palmer grew up in California and Arizona. He starred for Arizona State and signed with the Orioles in 1964. Palmer was elected to the Baseball Hallof Fame in 1990 with 92.57 percent of the ballots.
In the 26 previous years of the clinic, 107 major leagues, managers, coaches andadministrators have participated in the clinic weekend. Past Hall of Famers included HankAaron, Brooks Robinson, Lou Brock, Jim 'Catfish' Hunter, Tommy Lasorda, HarmonKillebrew, Dave Winfield, Sparky Anderson, Ferguson Jenkins, Gaylord Perry, RobinRoberts, Bob Feller and Steve Carlton.
