NORFOLK, VA (Sept. 7, 2003) - Old Dominion's Men's Soccer team (3-0-0) defeated the fifth-ranked Stanford Cardinal (1-1-0) Sunday 1-0 in the Adidas Cal Legacy Classic Tournament in Berkeley, California on a late first-half goal by Bamidele Oluwalana (Oslo, Norway) to win the tournament. The win marks the first time the Monarchs have defeated a top-five ranked team since the 1997 season-Coach Alan Dawson's first season-when ODU defeated third-ranked Virginia 1-0 at home before a sell out crowd. Stanford had previously been undefeated, beating #18 Cal State-Fullerton Friday night.

Bamidele Oluwalana (Oslo, Norway) scored the winning goal a minute before the first half expired to lead the Monarch effort. ODU out-shot Stanford 9 to 5.

Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA) was named the tournament MVP. Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica), Ian Kailia (Fredericksburg, VA), and goalkeeper Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC) were named to the All-Tournament team. Cameron earned two shut-outs during the tournament, against nationally-ranked opponents.

Coach Dawson said after the game, "[This is a] huge win for our program. To go out on the west coast and win two matches against two ranked teams is a very hard thing to do."

The Monarchs remain undefeated this season, defeating the 19th-ranked Bears of Cal-Berkeley (1-1-1) Friday. Freshman Kevin McMenamin (West Springfield, MA) scored the winning goal to lead ODU. Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) also had an assist in the game.

ODU next plays American University Friday night, Sept. 12, at 7:00 PM and plays against Longwood Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2:30 PM in the Stihl Soccer Classic at ODU.
