NORFOLK, VA -- NCAA Tournament participants Penn State, North Carolina, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and NCAA runner-up Tennessee highlight the 2003-04 Lady Monarch schedule along with an appearance in the WBCA Classic and home dates with Georgia Tech and UNC-Charlotte. In March, Old Dominion will also once again serve as host of the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament and welcome the NCAA Mideast Regional.
The 2003-04 campaign kicks off at the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) Classic in a preseason tournament hosted by the University of Colorado. The four-team, two-game tournament will also include Sweet Sixteen participants Colorado and Notre Dame, and WNIT Champion Auburn. (Click here for bracket information)
Following the WBCA Classic, the Lady Monarchs will kick off the CAA portion of the schedule with a match-up against William & Mary on Friday, November 21st before returning to the friendly confines of the Ted Constant Convocation Center for their second season in the building. Old Dominion will close out the month of November hosting Penn State (Nov. 25) and UNC-Charlotte (Nov. 30) before hitting the road to face Virginia Tech (Dec.3) to open the month of December.
The month of December will also feature home games with North Carolina (Dec. 7), Florida International (Dec. 15), and Georgia Tech (Dec. 18). The Florida International match-up will welcome home two former Lady Monarchs, Golden Panther co-head coaches Cindy Russo (1972-75) and Inge Nissen (1976-80), while the meeting with Georgia Tech will be the first between the two schools.
Old Dominion will close out its non-conference schedule against two long-time rivals on the road. The Lady Monarchs will travel to perennial rival Rutgers for a showdown on December 30th, while the non-conference slate comes to a close as Old Dominion continues its rivalry with national powerhouse Tennessee on January 4th.
Key home Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) home dates include George Mason on January 25th, UNC-Wilmington on January 29th, and CAA runner-up Delaware on February 20th.
The 12-time CAA Champions, who graduated forward Kim Giddens (Painter, VA) and First Team All-CAA point guard Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA), welcome back nine letterwinners and three starters from last season, including Preseason First Team All-CAA pick Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) and CAA Tournament MVP guard Shareese Grant (Va. Beach, VA). Along with redshirt freshman Shantel Wilson (Washington, D.C.), the Old Dominion roster will also include three incoming freshmen, center Angela Brown (Albany, KY) and forwards Tish Lyons (Newport News, VA), and Sherida Triggs (Atlanta, GA).
