SANTO DOMINGO, DR-- Paul Janish's (Rice) one-out RBI sacrifice fly broke a2-2 tie in the 14th inning and Huston Street (Texas worked eight and 2/3innings of relief to pick up the win as the USA Baseball National Team advanced toplay for the gold medal at the 2003 Pan Am games with a 3-2 win against Mexico.Team USA is now 27-1 this summer, and 5-1 at the Pan Am Games.
ODU's Justin Verlander worked the first two and 2/3 innings allowing four hitsone run, one walk and one strikeout. Mark Romanczuk (Stanford) also pitchedtwo and 2/3 innings.
Street allowed just three hits in the outing, struck out seven, walked two, bothintentionally. The win for Street was his first of the summer. Street, who leadsTeam USA in appearances with 14, has not allowed a run in 29 innings pitched thissummer, and leads the team with seven saves.
With the game tied at two in the 14th, Seth Smith (Mississippi) singled with oneout and advanced to third on a double from designated hitter Stephen Head (Mississippi).Brent Lillilbridge (Washington) was intentionally walked to lead the bases bringingJanish to the plate. Janish hit the first pitch from Mexico reliever FranciscoCampos into left field and Smith was able to tag and just beat the throw in fromleftfield to put Team USA ahead by a run.
Huston Street then retired the side in the bottom half of the 14th with twostrikeouts and a ground out to seal the victory. USA will face the winner of theNicaragua-Cuba game on Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m.
