NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team fell to the country's eighth ranked team falling to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, 7-0. The Rams remain undefeated on the season improving to 18-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Lady Monarchs drop to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in CAA matches.
Virginia Commonwealth featured three ranked opponents, two in singles and one doubles squad. The Rams took the doubles point with #22 Barbora Zahnova and Silvia Urickova defeating ODU's junior Nataly Cahana and freshman Kertin Endlich, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles and Ana Franco Lopez and Marina Escobar Martinez downing senior Julia Sotiriu and freshman Coralie Herrmann, 8-1, at the No. 2 position.
Junior Nataly Cahana, ranked 18th nationally, fell to Barbora Zahnova, ranked #67 in the nation, forcing the tie break. Cahana lost 2-6, 7-5 (10-8) at No. 1 singles. Freshman Kerstin Endlich also faced a ranked opponent in #35 Marina Escobar Martinez, dropping a 6-1, 6-1, decision at No. 2 singles. Senior Julia Sotiriu nearly defeated Silvia Urickova in the first set, 7-6, but also dropped the second set, 6-3. Freshmen Coralie Herrmann and Verena Munzinger were defeated at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. Herrmann fell to Ana Franco 6-2, 6-2, and Munzinger was defeated by Cristina Gago, 6-0, 6-4.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action tomorrow against the University of Miami (FL).
