PHILADELPHIA,PA.-- Sophomore righthander Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) held Drexelhitless for seven plus innings, then finished with a three-hitter as the Monarchsdefeated the Dragons, 7-3 in a CAA contest Friday afternoon.
Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) knocked in three runs, and Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.)knocked in two runs for ODU. Chipman knocked in Gregula in the fifth and sixth, andJoe Moore (WOodbridge, VA.) in the eighth. Gregula, who had three hits on the day,knocked in Pedro Pena (Haverhill, MA.) and Steven Harris (Va. Beach, Va.) in thesixth inning.
Going into the seventh, Verlander had only allowed a walk to Brent Heaberlin in thefirst and he hit Jason Bailey with a pitch in the fifth. With two outs in theseventh, Luke Sundheim singled, moved to second on an error, then scored on a singleby Jeff Lamb. Drexel scored two more unearned runs in the ninth. Verlander fannednine, walked two for his sixth win of the year.
The two teams will play Saturday at 1:00 at Drexel.
