NORFOLK, VA. -- Alfred Corbin's two-run homer highlighted a five-run NSU uprising in thefifth, he then scored a run in the eighth to help the Spartans hold off ODU for an 8-6 win Wednesday night at Marty Miller Field.
NSU took a 2-0 lead after two, but the Monarchs tied the game in the fourth as BrentSollenberger scored on a sacrifice fly by DeMarque Hairston. NSU then scored five runsin the fifth keyed by the two-run homer by Corbin to dead centerfield.
ODU mounted another rally in the seventh thanks to three Spartan errors. Brent Sollenbergersingled home Hiarston and Jesse Schoendiest to cut the lead to 7-6. The Spartans thenadded a run in the eighth as Joshua Melvin doubled home Corbin. The victory was NSU'sfirst over ODU since a 7-6 victory in 1984.
In the ODU top of the ninth Michael Koppin singled, and Allen Strick walked with one out,but NSU reliever Eugene Goodson fanned the next two hitters to end the game, and thewin for Andrew Renshaw.
Brent Sollenberger led ODU with two hits and two runs batted in. Brandon Norvell andAlfred Corbin led NSU with three hits each.
The Monarchs travel to Richmond this weekend for a three-game CAA series againstVirginia Commonwealth at the Diamond.
