The visiting Marist College baseball team defeated Old Dominion 9-2 on Sunday to earn the three-game sweep of their weekend series.
The Red Foxes (3-0), defending MAAC Champions jumped out with five runs in the first, knocking Monarch starter James Burok (Archbald, PA) out after recording just two outs. Marist touched Burok for all five runs on four hits, including back to back doubles by Matt Griffiths and Eric Johnson to open the contest.
ODU put up single runs in the fifth and sixth but Marist scored two more in the top of sixth to maintain the seven run advantage.
Freshman Jason Godin (Stafford, VA) relieved Burok and went 5 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, seven strikeouts, and five walks. Sophomore Jesse Shoendienst (Belcamp, MD) led the Monarchs with two hits and a run.
Ryan Kondratowicz picked up the victory for Marist scattering 6 hits with 3 strikeouts, giving up only one hit through his first four innings of work. Firstbaseman John McGorty recorded 3 hits including 2 doubles while knocking in a run and scoring twice. Centerfielder Matt Griffiths also had three hits on the day with two runs batted in and a run while Mike Sidoti added two hits with a run and RBI.
The Monarchs (4-5) will be home again on Tuesday to host the University of Richmond at 3:00 p.m. The Spiders reached the NCAA Super regionals last year.
