CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Lady Monarch women's tennis team fell to the No. 33 Virginia women's squad defeating Old Dominion, 6-1, at the Boar's Head Sports Club on Friday night. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 on the season, while handing the Lady Monarchs (1-1) their first loss.
The Lady Monarchs took home only one victory as fifth ranked junior Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel) defeated Henriette Williams in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at first singles. The Cavaliers swept the rest of the singles matches.
Newcomer Kerstin Endlich dropped a 6-1, 6-2 verdict to nationally ranked Jennifer Tuchband at second singles while fellow newcomer Maretha Van Niekerk dropped a 6-2, 6-2 at third singles to Lori Stern. Virginia's Kristen James handed senior Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) a 6-3, 6-1 defeated at fifth singles, while the Cavalier's Bechliwanis sisters defeated Old Dominion's entries at fifth and sixth singles. Dora Dechliwanis gave freshman Coralie Hermann (Porrentruy, Switzerland) a 6-1, 6-1 loss, while Marta Bechliwanis downed Verna Munzinger, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Virginia defeated all three Lady Monarch doubles teams. Cahana and Van Niekerk fell 8-4 to Tuchband and Williams at first doubles. Second doubles duo of Endlich and Herrmann dropped an 8-4 match to James and Stern and the Bechliwanis sisters handed Munzinger and Sotiriu an 8-1 loss at third doubles.
The Lady Monarchs will look to rebound in their next match against Maryland in College Park, MD on Saturday, February 8th.
