The Old Dominion wrestling team finished eighth out of 15 teams with 39 total points at the Beast of the East Tournament on Friday, December 20th. Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe Rider University won the event, hosted by the University of Delaware, with 145 points, beating out Ohio University who finished with 119.5.
Junior Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) performed well in his hometown, leading all Monarchs with a second place finish in the 285 pound weight class. He went 3-1 on the day with two falls but lost in the finals to Mike Carroll of Drexel after a 1-1 tie-breaker. Freshman Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) took third at 184 with a 5-1 record and two major decisions.
Redshirt freshman Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) at 133 and junior Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) at 197, each picked up two wins during the tournament.
Rider had five weight class champions to top Ohio, who had two, for the win. Buffalo, the third place finisher, Bloomsburg and Drexel each had one class champion.
ODU begins their dual schedule Tuesday, January 7th when they travel to UNC-Greensboro for a match at 4:00 p.m.
