The Old Dominion wrestling team won nine of the ten bouts en route to a 42-6 victory in their home dual opener against American University Friday night at the ODU Field House.
The Monarchs (3-2) lost only the 141-pound class due to a forfeit. ODU won six of the other nine matches in dominating fashion, earning one fall, three technical falls, one major decision and one medical decision.
American (0-12) forfeited the 197-pound class, giving junior Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) the win. Freshman Matt Ulrey (St. Mary's MI) recorded the lone fall of the meet at 165 pounds against Eric Fantegrossi in 1:25. Freshman redshirt Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) at 125, Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) at 157, and freshman Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) at 184 each scored technical falls in their respective matches. Junior John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) defeated Matt Pelligrino 15-6 for a major decision.
ODU will next travel to Lexington, VA for the Virginia State Intercollegiate Meet on Sunday.
