ST. THOMAS, VI - Five Lady Monarchs scored in double figures as the Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated Hampton Roads rival Hampton, 90-54, for its first win of the season at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. The Lady Monarchs improve to 1-3 overall and take third place at the tournament.
Old Dominion raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back as they went on to take a 47-24 half time lead. Senior guard Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA) netted 10 of her team-high 18 points, while the Lady Monarch defense only allowed four Lady Pirates to score in the first half.
Hampton would only get as close as 21 points in the second half, 38-59, with 13:55 remaining. Old Dominion closed the final 5:49 of the game on a 11-3 run.
Junior Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) poured in her second straight double-double performance with 10 points and 10 boards. Junior Myriah Spence (Espanola, NM) and sophomore Shareese Grant (Va. Beach, VA) also chipped in 10 points apiece, while junior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) came off the bench for 12 points.
LaShondra Dixon, who scored Hampton's first eight points of the evening, ended the evening with a game-high 25 points. Brendy Ellis came off the bench to add 11 points for the Pirates who fall to 1-3 overall.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Thursday when they travel to East Rutherford, NJ for a match-up with Seton Hall at the Continental Airlines Arena.
