Lady Monarchs Set To Face Team Concept In Exhibition Showing

NORFOLK, VA (November 13, 2002) -- The Lady Monarchs take to the floor in their third and final exhibition showing of the season tonight against the Basketball Travelers of Sweden. In their last exhibition showing, the Lady Monarchs defeated Team Concept, a team comprised of six players from the WNBA as well as from overseas, 90-60.

Four Lady Monarchs reached double figures in the victory over Team Concept led by senior captain Kim Giddens (Painter, VA) and 2002-03 CAA Preseason Player of the Year, Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA), each with 16. Freshman Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, FL) chipped in 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting and fellow newcomer sophomore Paula Muxiri (Luanda, Angola) added 10 points. On the boards, redshirt freshman Corrina Turner (Miami, FL) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, Giddens collected seven, and junior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) and Davis each pulled down six.

The Basketball Travelers were formed in 1996 by a cooperaton between four youth clubs in Stockholm, Sweden. Today, the club consists of both men's and women's team sthat compete in the highest division in Sweden. The team placed 5th in the Swedish championships losing in the quarterfinals. Forward Anette Percy played at Clemson and forward Helena Ahlstrom played at Hofstra. Percy, guard Malin Gernnadt, guard Linda Norgren, and center Agga Jablonska all play on the Swedish National Team. Guard Chioma Nnamaka, forward Nina Risto, guard/forward Jennie Thingwall, and guard Therese Engstrom all play on the Swedish Junior National Team.

Basketball Travelers have been playing in college exhibition games throughout the month of December. They lost to Wake Forest last night in Winston-Salem, NC, 76-51, with Malin Gernnadt leading the team with 16 points. Basketball Travelers has also lost to Tennessee, 116-50 (M. Gernnadt - 12 pts.), UNC-Greensboro, 68-62 (M. Gernnadt - 19pts.), and former CAA rival East Carolina, 79-67.

Old Dominion will begin the regular season on Friday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m. as Old Dominion hosts the Virginia Cavaliers.
