NORFOLK, VA -- Kim Giddens (Painter, VA) scored a game-high 17 points as the #23 Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated the Basketball Travelers of Sweden 84-55 Wednesday night in exhibition action at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Lady Monarchs opened up a 31-8 lead, including a 26-4 run, with eight minutes left in the first half on the way to their second convincing victory of the pre-season. Giddens led the way in the first period with 15 points while Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) added 10. Angie Nelp netted eight first half points for the Basketball Travelers. ODU shot a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe and held their opponents to 24 percent shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Monarchs continued their dominating play to start the second half opening with a 13-5 run and would be up by as many as 42 just over halfway through the period. The Travelers would mount a small comeback but the Lady Monarchs were able to hold them off.

Coker finished with 14 point and four boards and senior Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA) tallied 12 points with six assists and five steals. Nelp was the only visitor to score in double figures as she finished with 19.

ODU will open up the 2002-03 regular season next Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome the University of Virginia to Norfolk. This will be the first regular season matchup held at the brand new Ted Constant Convocation Center.
