HOUSTON, TX. -- Old Dominion University sophomore Anna Tunnicliffe(Perrysburg, OH.) captured the the ICSA/Vanguard North America Women's Singlehanded Sailing National Championships, and teammate Corrie Clement (Metairie, LA.) finished fifth. It was ODU's13th national championship in that sport.
"This is a great feeling", said Tunnicliffe. "I was more excited than nervous today. I was just looking forward to this race against such great competition."
Tunnicliffe wins the Lutz trophy by finishing Sunday's racing with a third and a second place in her final three races. She tallied 69 points, ten ahead of Molly Carapiet of Yale. Lindsay Buchan of UC Santa Barbara was third with 80, Genoa Griffin of South Florida was fourth with 88 and ODU teammate Corie Clement scored 98 to take fifth in the 16-person championship regatta. Through 16 races Tunnicliffe was first, second, or third in nine of them.
The Intercollegiate Sailing Association has six national championships during theyear; men's and women's singlehanded, sloop, team race, coed-dinghy and women's. The ODU women's squad captured the ICSA title last spring.
In all, OldDominion University has now won 30 collegiate National Championships (13 in sailing,9 in field hockey, 3 in women's basketball,1 in men's basketball(Div. II), three wrestling individual titles, and one individual title inwomen's tennis.
