PISCATAWAY, NJ- Chris Karcz's goal three minutes into the first overtime period lifted 13th ranked Rutgers to a 3-2 victory over the Monarchs of Old Dominion University in theRutgers-Adidas Soccer Classic.. ODU is now 4-4, while the Scarlet Knights' are 4-2-3.
The Monarchs led 2-0 at halftime as Michael Goncalves (Alexandria, Va.) scored on a pass from the right side by Bamidele Oluwalana (Oslo, Norway). With ten minutes remaining in the first half Atilla Vendegh's (Bratislava, Slovakia) cross at the top of the box fed Brandon Baker for the Monarchs second goal.
In the second half Wes Kirk scored on an assist from Yaron Shlomi and with 27 minutesremaining Sam Castellanos tied the match with a shot to the upper right of the goal on an assist from Sherif El Bialy, and send the match into sudden death overtime.
Rutgers outshot the Monarchs, 24-13 (18-6 in the second half). ODU's goalkeeperSamuel Cameron(Raleigh, NC.) came up with six saves, while Rutgers Ricky Zinter also had six saves. The Monarchs return to action on Friday when they host George Mason at 7 p.m. in aCAA contest.
