Monarchs to Take on State-Rival UVA This Wednesday

Oct. 22, 2002

The Old Dominion men's soccer team travels to Charlottesville, VA on Wednesday for a key non-conference matchup with state-rival University of Virginia. The Monarchs come into the game at 6-5-0/3-1-0 and tied for eighth in the South Atlantic Region with William and Mary. The Cavaliers (8-5-0/2-3-0) are ranked 23rd in the nation and third in the region.

ODU takes a break from Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) action after splitting a set this weekend. They defeated Delaware 1-0 before dropping a 1-0 game to Towson. The loss to Towson was only their second conference setback since the 2000 season. The loss also dropped them into second place in the conference behind Virginia Commonwealth who has won all three of their league games this year.

UVA is 7-0 at home and features one of the most explosive scorers in the nation. Alecko Eskandarian leads the country in points per game, 3.33, and goals per game, 1.50. The Cavaliers have won 13 of the 19 games between the two schools, but ODU won the last matchup, 1-0 in 1997.

The Monarchs return home this weekend to continue their CAA schedule. They face #24 Hofstra on Friday and host Drexel on Saturday.
