The Old Dominion sailing team competed in three events over the weekend with Neil Ford (St. John's/Virgin Islands) leading the way with a second place finish at the Laser Qualifier which will qualify him for the Singlehanded Championships next month. ODU also got a third place finish in the St. Mary's Open and a fifth place showing at the Sloop Championships.
Ford totaled 49 points in 14 races posting three victories. He finished seven points behind the winner Stephen Gay from Navy who won five races. Gay's teammate Charles Fulmer will join Ford and Gay at the regional championships in Annapolis, MD. Jack Kerr (Seattle, WA) and Bill Berg (Longwood, FL) finished fifth and sixth respectively to round out the ODU participants.
The ODU sailors at the St. Mary's Open totaled 189 points in a third place finish at the St. Mary's Open. The A division boat of Ignacio Saralegui (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Christabelle Fernandez (Va. Beach, VA) came in third while Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, NY) and Amy Bourne (Va. Beach, VA) took a seventh place B division finish. Hobart/William Smith took the win with 124 points
At the Sloop Championships ODU finished with 49 points and fifth place. Hobart/William Smith won this event as well with 25 points in 10 races.
