Monarch Soccer Squads Open CAA Schedule on Saturday

Sept. 27, 2002

Both Old Dominion soccer teams will be in action on Saturday as they open up Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Lady Monarchs will be home to host James Madison at 7:00 p.m. while the men travel to UNC-Wilmington for their second road matchup in as many games.

The ODU women's soccer squad is coming off their first shutout of the season last Sunday when they dropped American 5-0. It was their second five-goal performance on the year and it stopped a four-game losing streak. Ashley Kramer (Jefferson Hills, PA) scored twice and now leads the team with four goals and eight points. Sophomore Maura Linz (Prospect, KY) broke an ODU record with four assists in the game. She now has five on the year, two more than her total last season, when she named CAA Rookie of the Year.

The Dukes (5-3-1/1-0) defeated Towson 5-0 on Wednesday in their first CAA contest. They have three shutouts so far in the 2002 season and have two players with more than 10 points (Kim Argy, 12; Deanna Saracino, 11).

The Lady Monarchs (2-5-0/0-0) have battled with JMU on nine occasions with ODU dropping seven of them, including the last four. The last victory for ODU came in 1997 when they won 2-1 in overtime.

The men's soccer team defeated an American squad, ranked #12 at the time, 3-2 in overtime last Wednesday. Sophomore Kyle Hartley (Va. Beach, VA) scored his second goal of the season just four minutes into sudden death overtime to give ODU their third come from behind victory of the year.

Scoring leader Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) tied the game at two when he netted his third goal of the season with less than 10 minutes remaining. That goal was his 33rd as a Monarch, only three behind the career record of 36 held by Sean Crowley.

UNC-Wilmington has the best record in the CAA after starting the season 5-0. All five wins have been one-goal victories, including two 1-0 games and a 2-1 overtime victory over High Point. Old Dominion will be their first CAA opponent of the 2002 campaign. The Seahawks are only 2-9 versus the Monarchs after a 5-1 defeat to ODU last season.
