CHAPEL HILL, NC- Tenth ranked North Carolina defeated second rankedOld Dominion Saturday afternoon, 2-0 in a battle between one of the nation's longestfield hockey rivalries. Sophomore Kelsey Keeran and senior Stephanie Fuller each scoredgoals for the Tar Heels who are now 4-3, ODU is now 5-2.
With 2:08 remaining in the first half, Keeran got a pass on the break from AlisonStewart on the left side to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead. In the beginning of the secondhalf the Tar Heel's scored again on a penalty corner by Stephanie Fuller.
Old Dominion outshot UNC, 13-11 and received more penalty corners,11-9. ODUgoalkeeper Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA.) made eight saves, while Amy Tran of UNC had nine and picked up the shutout.Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA.) led ODU with five shot attempts.
The two teams have met 53 times in the last 22 years, including 11 times in NCAAtournaments. ODU leads the series, 29-22-2. The two teams will meet again on Nov. 2in Norfolk. The Lady Monarchs travel to William and Mary Sunday for a 2 p.m. CAA match.
