NORFOLK, VA. - The Monarchs of Old Dominion University behind solidpitching defeated crosstown rival Norfolk State University, 2-0 Friday night at the BudMetheny Baseball Complex. For the first time since April 11 when ODU was 16-15 the Monarchs (23-22) are now back over 500. NSU is now 16-31.

In the bottom of the first John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) walked, forcing home Joe Moore (Woodbridge, Va.) to give ODU a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.) hit an opposite field homer to complete the scoring.

The Spartans threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases as JoshuaMelvin reached on an infield hit, Eugene Goodson then got a bloop single to rightand Nicholas Morant walked. Reliver Jonathan Tinkham (Chesapeake, VA.) then pitched out of the jam by striking out the side for his fifth save of the year.

ODU's pitching staff fanned a season high 16, led by Ryan Williams (Va.Beach, Va.) with five. Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.) and James Burok(Archbald, Pa.)ach fanned four. It was the Monarchs third shutout of the season and winning pitcher Justin Verlander has been a part of all three.

NSU's Andrew Renshaw fanned five and allowed only three hits in the loss.Jared Musolf had two hits on the day, a homer and a double for ODU. The Monarchsbreak for exams and return to action at Towson on Friday, April 10 for a three-gameCAA series. NSU travels to William and Mary Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
