NORFOLK, VA. - Behind the pitching of junior reliever Kevin Evansthe Monarchs of Old Dominion defeated crosstown rival Norfolk State University,8-2 Monday night at Marty Miller Stadium. ODU is now 22-22 overall, while theSpartans drop to 16-30.
Evans came in relief of starter Ken Brumfield in the second inning and fanneda career-high ten batters, walking only two and allowing only one hit. Freshman DonnieSmith pitched the last inning, fanning the side. ODU pitchers struck out 14 Spartanhitters on the night.
In the fifth inning, with the Spartans leading, 2-1, John Oehler singled home Kevin Snapp to tie the game and later in the inning Allen Strick stole home to giveODU the lead for good at 3-2.
Joe Moore, Kevin Snapp, Allen Strick, Jared Musolf and Demarque Hairstoneach had two hits on the night. Joshua Melvin led NSU with two hits.
NSU's two runs came in the second inning. Brandon Norvell scored fromthird on a ODU throwing error and Alfred Corbin scored on a wild pitch.
The two teams meet again on Friday night at ODU's Bud Metheny Complexat 7 p.m.
