WILLIAMSBURG, VA-- Clark Saylor and Chris Ray scattered five hits and outdueled Monarchfreshman pitching sensation, Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.) for a 2-0 CAA win Saturdayafternoon.
ODU is now 17-20 overall and 1-9 in the CAA, while William and Mary, the defending CAAChampion is 21-21 overall and 4-7 in the CAAa.
After five-plus innings of scoreless baseball, the Tribe scored two runs in the bottomof the sixth inning.Kyle Padgett, who led the inning off with a double scored an unearnedrun on Tim Jones fielder's choice grounder. With two outs Tim Wakefield singled platingJones for a 2-0 Tribe lead.
Monarch freshman righthander Justin Verlander fanned seven (he struck out the side inthe first inning), walked two and gave up six hits. ODU has scored only two runs forhim in his last four CAA outings. Ranked 23rd nationally in earned run average, Verlander'sERA is now at 1.89 with 91 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
Winning pitcher Clark Saylor picked up his first win of the year, fanning four andwalking only one. ODU had two runners on base only in the second inning when with twoouts Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.) and Demarque Hairston (Martinsville, VA.) hit back to backsingles.
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
