RICHMOND, VA. - Old Dominion University junior designated hitterGary Lowther (Union City, CA.) knocked in three runs with two homers and freshman pitcher James Burok (Archbald, Pa.)pitched a complete game as the Monarchs defeated #22 Richmond Monday afternoon, 7-4. ODU is now 13-13, while the Spiders saw their nine-game win streak end, are 24-3.

The Spiders took a 3-0 lead. In the first Matt Craig singled home David Reaver.In the second inning, Bryan Pritz ground out plated David Thomas and John Croninscored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth inning, Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) singled in Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.) and Gary Lowther followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at three. In the seventh, Lowther led off with a solo homer to give ODU the lead. Brent Sollenberger then singled home DeMarque Hairston (Martinsville, VA.)and Mike Croley (Jupiter, FL.) to give ODU a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh inning, John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) singled home Gary Lowther with the Monarchs seventh run. Burok tossed his first collegiate game, fanning five andwalking only two, while scattering seven hits. Sollenberger had three hits on the dayto up his batting average to .380.

The Monarchs play the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. in their annual Metrocall Scholarship game. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for ODUstudents and children.
