NORFOLK, VA. - Junior outfielder Demarque Hairston (Martinsville, VA)singled home freshman Jess Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD.) with one out in the bottomof the ninth as Old Dominion University (12-11) defeated the Wolfpack of NorthCarolina State (19-8), 5-4.
John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) broke up a scoreless pitching duel betweenNC State's Ryan Combs and ODU's Needham Jones (Portsmouth, VA.) with adouble, scoring Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.).
In the seventh NC State scored four runs on a two-run single by DavidHicks, scoring Matt Butler and Colt Morton. Jeremy Dutton then singled inHicks and Adam Hargrave singled home Dutton to give the Wolfpack a 4-1 lead.
ODU scored two in the seventh as Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.)scored on a a balk and Mike Croley's (Jupiter, FL.) sacrifice fly scored Jared Musolf.The Monarchs tied the game in the eighth on Musolf's single, scoring Kevin Snapp(Yorba Linda, CA.). In the ninth Schoendienst led off with a single, then was balkedto second.
N.C. State loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but Rusty Hummel (Montgomery, NY.) pitched out of the jam to earn his first win of the year.ODU freshman starter Needham Jones pitched five scoreless innings fanning sevenand walking one. N.C.State starter Ryan Combs was perfect against the Monarchs until Musolf's one out infield single in the fifth.
ODU begins CAA play Friday with a three-game series at George Mason whileN.C.State hosts Georgia Tech in ACC play.
