ECU Rallies To Defeat Monarchs, 9-5

NORFOLK, VA. - The Pirates of East Carolina (15-6-1) scored seven runsin the last three innings for a come-from-behind 9-5 victory over Old DominionUniversity Tuesday afternoon. Clayton McCullough's two-run single in the eighthput ECU up for good, 6-5. This was a re-scheduled contest from last week'srainout.

The Monarchs, behind the pitching of freshman James Burok (Archbald, PA.)took a 5-2 lead into the seventh. Burok finished with six strikeouts and two walks. ECU cut it to 5-4 on Jamie Paige's two-run homer. McCullough then singled in two runs in the eighth to give the Pirates the lead and in the ninth Jed Sorrenson singled in a run, Warren Gasper sacrifice fly scored the second run and pinch hitter Adam Stephens doubled home the ninth and final run.

With ECU led, 1-0 in the first as Jedd Sorenson scored on a wildpitch, ODU came back to tie the game in the second as John Oehler's (Audubon, NJ.) grounder scored Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.). In the fourth, Jess Schoendienst (Belcamlp, Md.) singled home Mike Croley (Jupiter, Fla.) to make it 2-1. In the Oehler singled home Kevin Snapp(Yorba Linda, CA.) and Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.) to give the Monarchs a 4-1 lead.

ECU cut it to 4-2 on a solo home run by Darry Lawhorn, his 12th of the season.But in the bottom of the sixth ODU added a run on Snapps sacrifice fly, scoring RyanHarvey(Riverside, CA.).

Ryan Harvey led ODU with three hits on the day, while Snapp, Sollenbergerand Allen Strick each had two hits. Oehler knocked in three runs for the Monarchs.ECU was led by Jamie Paige and Clayton McCullough with two RBI, while Sorenson,Lawhorn, Gasper and Paige each had two hits. Old Dominion stranded 11 runs.

ECU reliever Kieran Mattison picked up the win in relief with three shutoutinnings. ODU hosts North Carolina State Wednesday night at 7 p.m, while the Pirateshost Campbell at 7 p.m. at ECU.
