NORFOLK, VA. - Freshman righthander Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.)scattered eight hits and fanned eight as the Monarchs of Old Dominion Universitydefeated Columbia, 4-1 Monday afternoon. ODU is now 11-10, Columbia, wholost earlier in the day to Connecticut, 12-2 is 2-8.
Verlander runs his record to 4-1 on the season. He fanned the side in the sixth inning and got solid defensive support as the Monarchs turned three double plays.
The Monarchs scored first in the opening inning as Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) doubled and Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.) followed with an RBI double. Columbia came back in the third to tie the game as Billy Hess doubled home Jorge Livermore.
In the sixth with two outs, Musolf singled and scored on Brandon Lenoir's(Ocala, FL.) RBI single. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth Matt MoyeBeaver Falls, PA.) singled home Brent Sollenburger (Chambersburg, PA.) , who led off the inning with a triple, and John Oehler (Audobon, NJ.) who was intentionally walked to give ODU a 4-1 lead.
Kieth Palmieri led the lions with three hits and Billy Hess added two. Strick,Musolf and Lenior each had two hits for Old Dominion. The Monarchs host 20thranked East Carolina on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Columbia travels to Georgetown onTuesday.
