Uconn Defeats Monarchs, 13-5

NORFOLK, VA. - The Connecticut Huskies scored 11 of their 13 runs in theseventh and eighth innings to defeat the Monarchs of Old Dominion, 13-5. The lossended ODU's five-game win streak. UCONN is 4-5, while the Monarchs are 10-10.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Dan Trubia singled home Jon Gorrie and Peter Soteropoulos later scored on a double steal attempt as Trubia wascaught in a run-down at second.

ODU rallied to take the lead in the third with three runs. Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA.) tripled home Ryan Harvey (Riverside, Ca.) and Kevin Snapp(Yorba Linda, Ca.). Sollenberger then scored on a throwing error by the rightfielder.

With ODU leading 3-2 in the seventh UCONN scored five runs capped by atwo-run double by Brett Burnham. UCONN scored six more in the eighth highlightedby a two-run triple by catcher Mike Leonard.

ODU scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the daysscoring. Pinchhitter Shawn Adcock (Alexandria, Va.) sacrifice fly scored Mike Croley (Jupiter, Fla.). Brent Sollenberger later singled home Evan Chipman.

Jesse Carlson won his third game of the season. He scattered eight hits withseven strikeouts in six-plus innings of work. ODU had 12 hits on the day as Sollenberger accounted for three of them and three runs batted in.

The two teams play on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
