NORFOLK, VA. -Tim Sweeney's three-run homer with two outs in the sixthand the strong pitching of All-American Bobby Brownlie lifted the Scarlet Knightsof Rutgers (3-1) to a 7-4 victory over Old Dominion (4-5) Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game series.
With two outs and Steve Normane and Leon Shade aboard Sweeney slammedhis homerun to left centerfield off reliever Jonathon Tinkham(Chesapeake, Va.) to give Rutgers a 6-2 lead. Jeff Frazier singled home Val Majewski in the seventh to make it 7-2.
Old Dominion scored two runs off Rutgers reliever Jason Bergmann as ShawnAdcock (Alexandria, Va.) homered in his first at bat of the season, then Kevin Snapp (Yorba Linda, CA.) doubled home Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.) to cut the lead to 7-4. Ryan Molchan came in to get the final out and the save.
After being held hitless by Brownlee through three innings, Brent Sollenbergersingled between third and short for the Monarchs first hit. He would later score on a RBI groundout by Ryan Harvey(Riverside, Ca.). Old Dominion cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on John Oehlers (Audubon, NJ.) RBI single, scoring DeMarque Hairston(Martinsville, Va.).
Brownlee pitched eight innings, allowing only two hits, walking none andstriking out six. Jeff Frazier had three hits and an RBI and Tim Sweeney had two hitsand three RBI for Rutgers. ODU was led by Brent Sollenberger with two hits and he scored two of the Monarchs four runs.
Because of the possibility of rain on Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader onSaturday at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, beginning at 12 noon.
