Charleston, SC-The West Virginia Mountaineers topped ODU 7-1 on the second day of competition at the Berkeley Electric Cooperative Shootout in Charleston, SC today. The Monarchs drop to 3-4 overall with the loss while WVU improves to 1-3.
WVU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as shortstop Eric Grimm reached base with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Derek Cisar.
ODU countered in the top of the second as Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA) ripped off a double and would later score on a RBI single by Demarque Hairston (Martinsville, VA).
The Mountaineers then broke things open in the fifth and sixth, scoring three runs in the bottom of each inning. WVU catcher Travis D'Amico provided the highlights with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 7-1.
WVU starter Zac Cline pitched five innings and struck out three to pick up his first win of the season. ODU starter Ryan Williams (Va. Beach, VA) took the loss and falls to 1-1 overall.
Old Dominion pounded out 10 hits during the game but left 11 men on base and committed three errors.
The Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow, when they take on Virginia Tech at 1:30.
