Virginia Defeats Monarchs, 12-4

CHARLESTON, SC. -- Dan Street wen 3-for-5, with three h ome runs and seven RBI tolead the University of Virginia past Old Dominion, 12-4 in game one of the BerkeleyElectric Shootout in Riley Park. In all, Virginia and ODU combined for seven homeruns with Virginia smashing five.

Virginia (4-0) started the scoring in the top of the first inning when left fielderDavid Stone led the game off with an opposite field homer. The Cavaliers tacked on threemore in the top of the third as Street cracked his first three-run homer over leftfield.

The Monarchs (3-3) jumped on the board in the fottom of the fourth when rightfielderBrent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.) hit a solo shot to bring the score to 4-1. TheMonarchs threatened again in the sixth with the score still, 4-1. Mike Croley (Jupiter,Fla.)and Matt Moye (Beaver Falls, Pa.) singled. After being sacrificed to second andthird with one out failed to score.

Virginia extended their lead 9-1 in the seventh as they posted five runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Shawn McCleary. Then Street hit a three-run homer.

The Moanrchs added runs in each of the next three innings that included a homerun bypinch h itter Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, Va.), and a single by Ryan Harvey(Riverside, Ca.).

Cavalier starter Jeff Kamrath pitched six innings, allowed one earned run and struckout four to pick up his second victory of the season.

The Monarchs return to action on Saturday in Charleston to take on West Virginiaat 10 am.
