Norfolk, VA-Old Dominion freshman Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA) pitched nine shut-out innings to lead the Monarchs to a 7-0 win over the U.S. Naval Academy this afternoon. With the win, Old Dominion improves to 3-1 and completes the three-game series sweep with the Midshipmen, who fall to 1-5.
Verlander struck out nine hitters while scattering five hits over the course of the game. His counterpart, Matt Foster, pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit ball before surrendering three runs in the sixth inning due to two errors and one passed-ball.
Old Dominion would score one in the seventh, as sophomore Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD) singled home Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ).
In the eighth, the Monarchs capitalized on Navy miscues again, taking advantage of three more errors and a hit-batter to plate Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, PA), Musolf and junior Ryan Harvey (Riverside, CA).
Harvey finished the game 2-4 with one RBI, and Strick finished 1-4 with one RBI for ODU.
Midshipmen 1B Neil Brubeck finished 1-3.
Old Dominion will return to action on Tuesday, February 19 against William & Mary.
