DURHAM, NC. - Duke scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inningto defeat the Monarchs of Old Dominion University, 7-2 Wednesday afternoon.The Monarchs are now 0-1, Duke improves to 3-1.
Troy Caradonna, Blake Walker Drew Jerdan and Kevin Kelly each knockedin a run in the fifth inning for the Blue Devils. In the second inning, after Caradonna scored on a wild pitch,Brian Patrick doubled home Doug Bechtol and winningpitcher Tim Layden.
The Monarchs got on the board in the fourth inning as shortstop Allen Strick(Glen Burnie, MD.)singled home Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ). In the fifth inningMusolf singled home Matt Moye (Beaver Falls, Pa.) To make it 3-2.
ODU freshman righthander Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.) lost hiscollegiate debut, but fanned eight batters in four-plus innings with five walks. TheMonarch bullpen of Jonathan Tinkham (Chesapeake, Va.), Needham Jones (Portsmouth, Va.) and Stephen Warren (Norfolk, Va.) Shut the Blue Devils downthe rest of the way.
Junior Brandon LeNoir (Ocala, FL.) led the Monarchs with three hits whileMatt Moye, a second team All-CAA selection last year had two hits. Kevin Kelly and Troy Caradonna each had two hits for Duke.
The Monarchs host Navy on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
