Piscataway, NJ-The #21 Old Dominion Lady Monarchs used muscle under the boards to dispatch Rutgers in women's basketball this evening, 70-48. ODU is now 14-5 overall while the Scarlet Knights fall to 7-13.
Old Dominion shook off a sluggish first half start to take a 28-15 haltime lead thanks in large part to senior Lucienne Berthieu, who scored 11 of her game high 20 points in the first stanza.
Overall, Rutgers couldn't match the inside presence of ODU as Berthieu, Monique Coker and Hamchetou Maiga combined for 40 points and 29 rebounds. The Lady Monarchs held a commanding 52-21 advantage in rebounds, 20 of which were offensive.
The Scarlet Knights were also plagued by foul problems during the game. Rutgers had two players foul out of the game and sent the Lady Monarchs to the charity stripe for 28 free-throws, with ODU connecting on 21.
Coker and Maiga scored ten points each for ODU, which shot a healthy .434 from the field. Rutgers shot .365 with only 14 points in the paint.
Guard Mauri Horton led the Scarlet Knights with 15 points before fouling out. Dawn McCullough added 14 in the losing effort.
Old Dominion will be back in action on Sunday, February 3, when they travel to CAA foe Towson.
