Women's Tennis Defeats Northern Iowa

NORFOLK, VA -- The women's tennis team (1-1) earned its first dual meet victory of the 2002 season with a 5-1 victory over Northern Iowa. All five singles players were victorious with the lone loss of the day coming at first doubles.

Sophomore All-American Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel) won easily at first singles, not dropping a single game (6-0, 6-0) against Hylene Long. Teammate senior Ana Radeljevic (Zagreb, Croatia) was a straight set winner at second singles, 6-0, 6-3, over Jessica Lands. At third singles, senior Mily Kannarkat (Va Beach, VA) used a 6-4, 6-0 game to defeat Northern Iowa's Thristia Bothova. Junior Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) was the lone Lady Monarchs to use more than two sets for her win. Sotiriu, in fourth singles, dropped her first set 4-6, before winning her next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, to put away Carrie Amsbaagh. Senior Patricia Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) closed out the singles competition with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jaime Noyce at the fifth slot.

In doubles action, the tandem of Cahana and Araujo dropped a 8-3 decision to Long and Lands for the lone Lady Monarch loss. The team of Karnarkat and Sotiriu emerged with a doubles victory, 8-3, overBothova and Amsbaagh.
